The speaker for this webinar was Ms. Leong Wai Mun, a bioinformatician from Neoscience Sdn. Bhd. The webinar covered the following: (i) introduction to next-generation sequencing); (ii) principle, application & workflow of whole-metagenome sequencing and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, (iii) data analysis and result presentation, which included core diversity metrics and taxonomy profiling. The target participants were UTAR academic staff, lab staff, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students. It was attended by 48 participants, which included 13 UTAR staffs, 31 UTAR students and 4 external participants. This webinar was coordinated by Dr. Yap Moh Lan and Ms. Phang Xin Jie (Neoscience).

The speaker for this webinar was Dr. Chanchao Lorthongpanich, who is a Senior Researcher at Siriraj Center of Excellence for Stem Cells Research (SiSCR), Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. She was one of the recipients of the prestigious L’Oréal Women in Science 2018 Award. The objective of this webinar was to share the knowledge and discoveries of using hematopoietic stem cells in platelet production for thrombocytopenia treatment. The target participants were students, academics, and the public. In the talk, he called for a revamp of current nutritional practices through an integrated management of DESF in the daily life to enrich a healthier lifestyle for a longer life span.
  • Dr. Prema Ramachandran, Director of the Nutrition Foundation of India, Talk title: “Sustainable Development Goal Nutrition Target: The Status and Future Priorities in India”. In the talk, she highlighted about the triple burden of malnutrition: under-nutrition, over-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies currently faced by all countries in the world and challenges faced over the decade to promote healthy dietary habits and hinder food insecurity in the country.
  • Puan Zalma binti Abdul Razak, Head of Nutrition Division of Ministry of Health Malaysia, Talk title: “'Nutrition Governance: Commitment, Capability and Collaboration in Malaysia”. In her talk, she explained about various nutrition programmes conducted in Malaysia and various challenges faced by the ministry especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also pointed out that revisions to the National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia is made time to time and the new National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia 2.0 was to be released in July 2021 with actions towards improving the nutritional wellbeing of the Malaysian population.
  • Prof. Dr. Vimal Karani S, Deputy Director of Institute of Food, Nutrition & Health (IFNH), University of Reading, UK, Principal Investigator and Founder of the Gene-Nutrient Interactions (GeNuIne) Collaboration, Talk title: “Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics: The ‘Omics’ Revolution in Nutritional Science”. In the talk, he discussed on the future of nutritional assessment and intervention integrating artificial intelligence, IoT and omics studies towards the development of personalised nutrition.

Its objectives were to enhance knowledge on fall risk and ways to prevent falls in the elderly, and promote healthy eating among the elderly to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases. 79 Nov 21 Webinar – The Beasts We Breathe Out: The Doors Opened by Face Mask Sampling

This webinar was co-organised with the Department of Biological Science, Faculty of Science. Its objective was to disseminate the knowledge and latest developments in the ingenious approach of face mask sampling in diagnosis of respiratory infections (focusing on tuberculosis & COVID-19) and assessment of case infectiousness. The speaker was Prof. Michael R. Barer, Professor of Clinical Microbiology from the Department of Respiratory Sciences, University of Leicester, UK. The research group led by Prof. Barer pioneered the development of the mask sampling approach for respiratory tuberculous aerosols and has made many significant discoveries and achievements with it to date. Prof. Barer is currently the external examiner for our Bachelor of Science (Honours) Microbiology programme; he delivered this webinar as part of his virtual visit from 9 to 10 November 2021.

The target participants for this webinar include academics, students, researchers, health professionals and the public (both local and international). A total of 198 participants was recorded and these comprised of 125 UTAR students, 24 UTAR staffs, and 49 external participants. Some of the latter were from India, Indonesia, and Switzerland. The coordinators for this webinar were Dr. Eddy Cheah Seong Guan and Dr. Shit Chong Seng, assisted by Mr. Ong Hing Huat (FSc PhD student).

This webinar was a collaboration with the Centre for Research on Communicable Diseases (CRCD). Its objectives were to disseminate the knowledge and latest developments in the use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) in microbiology research, and the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) application in the genetic control of mosquito vectors for diseases like dengue, Zika and malaria. Both these technologies have revolutionised the biological sciences, particularly those in the medical field, and are testaments to the limitless boundary of genomic advances. The speakers were as follows:

118 Apr - 9 Dec 2021 UTAR Hospital Fundraising – FSc T-shirt Selling
8th April 2021 – 9th December 2021

This is a joint project with three members from the Department of Physical and Mathematical Science (DPMS), Faculty of Science. The target buyers were current FSc staffs and students, and FSc alumni. A total of 147 pcs of T-shirt orders were received (138 pcs by UTAR staffs and students; 9 pcs by UTAR alumni). The total income obtained was RM 7,650 (T-shirts: RM 50 × 147; postage fees: RM 10 × 30). After considering the expenditure (T-shirt printing RM 3,160.50; postage cost RM 182.05), the balance was RM 4,307.45. All this surplus was contributed to the UTAR Hospital fundraising.

1215 Apr - 31 Dec 2021UTAR Hospital Fundraising – Give Your Preloved Items a Second Life
15th April 2021 – 31 December 2021

This is a joint project with the Centre for Agriculture and Food Research (CAFR), Faculty of Science, and several programme-based student societies affiliated to FSc. A total of 54 items (used/new) was contributed by 19 individuals (17 UTAR staffs, 2 UTAR students); these included books, stationery, household appliances, accessories, etc. There were also joint activities – selling of homemade cakes, learning kits, fertilisers, photosynthetic bacteria (PBS) and potted plants. The total income from these initiatives was RM 1,844.50, which has been contributed to the UTAR Hospital Fundraising.

13th December 2021 – 28th February 2022

This is a joint project with Faculty of Science. Various types of cooking sauces (mainly soy sauce) amounting to RM 3,120.40 were donated by Heng Lee Sauce Sdn. Bhd. (Penang) for the UTAR Hospital fundraising. All products are Halal certified and are sold at their respective retail prices. The target buyers are mainly those from Kampar and surrounding areas, Penang, and Ipoh – for home use, food establishments and hawkers. The total amount sold to date is RM 1,693.65.
