Foreword by Vice President (Research, Development and Commercialisation)

Recognising the crucial role of research and development (R&D) in enhancing a nation's prosperity and driving economic progress, UTAR has prioritised R&D since its inception in 2002. The university has systematically built an environment that nurtures a strong research culture through initiatives such as the UTAR Research Roadmap, UTAR Research Fund policy, UTAR Research Scholarship Scheme, UTAR Global Research Network, the establishment of research centers, and collaborations with local industries and esteemed institutions.

To further elevate its R&D endeavors, UTAR introduced detailed roadmaps for faculties and research centers in 2021, building on the foundation laid by the previous UTAR Roadmap that ended in 2014. Presently, UTAR boasts 34 research centers staffed by over 1,300 dedicated academic professionals. These centers drive R&D across diverse fields, including Renewable Energy, Stem Cell Research, Cybersecurity, Smart Agriculture, Wastewater Treatment, Cancer Research, E-Commerce, IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Behavioral Science, Plant Physiology, Chinese Studies, Construction Management, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Sensor Research.

In 2023, UTAR unveiled a visionary 10-year strategic plan (2023 - 2032), positioning R&D as a central pillar. This forward-looking plan aims to elevate the university's research and innovation capabilities, reaffirming its dedication to educational and research excellence. The strategy focuses on boosting interdisciplinary collaboration, upgrading research infrastructure, and expanding global research network engagements. It also addresses contemporary challenges and opportunities through advanced research initiatives.

This R&D Annual Report aims to highlight UTAR's steadfast efforts and significant accomplishments in high-impact R&D projects, research publications, collaborations, activities by UTAR Research Centres, consultancies, and received awards. It provides a comprehensive overview of UTAR's research achievements and underscores the university's commitment to nurturing new talent through R&D, thereby advancing knowledge, innovation, and societal development. With the strategic plan's implementation, UTAR aspires to achieve global recognition as a leading institution in educational and research excellence, making a transformative societal impact.
