1The Ethical Practice of Psychology in Organisations 22 January 2022 Saturday, 9.00am to 11.30am
Topic 1: The Ethical Practice of Psychology in Organizations

A team comprising UTAR academics (in-house mentors) and students from different faculties were crowned as Champions for their project titled “MEDiCAM” at the Health iPhAMA-thon 2022: Decoding Chronic Disease through Innovation, which was hosted by the Pharmaceutical Association, Malaysia (PhAMA): Innovative Medicines for Malaysia. The name of their team was “What the Health”. The competition commenced with the submissions of student projects on 18 October 2022. Student teams (four members each) selected from universities all over Malaysia were then exposed to a mentor-assigned two-day workshop conducted by the iPhAMA-thon. The teams were then allowed two weeks to develop the submitted project. The seven teams that were short-listed conducted a Closed-door Final Presentation on 3 December 2022 at the One World Hotel, PJ, KL.

The award-winning project was a cross-disciplinary project by Mechatronics Engineering student, Tan Xuan Qing, Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Lew Yanzhe (both of them are Undergraduate Research Scheme (URS) students), and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) students, Lee Dywei and Celysce Fui Sze Kei under the mentorship of Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Thaw Zin and lecturer Dr Avneet Kaur, M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) and Chairperson of Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity (CITC) Dr Aloysius Yapp from the Game Study department of Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI).

Their project stemmed from UTAR’s strive to become an “Age-friendly University” which aims to serve as a solution to overcome the burden of a collective disability of old age called the “Geriatric Syndrome”, the main cause of elderly Malaysians ending up in Assisted Living Residences (ALR). The ‘Prototype: Apps’ developed by the students was derived from the principle of the incorporation of “Digital Technology” into “Medicine” which can be used for organising and administering medication in the elderly (called Realistic Care and Responsible Medication) both by the care-takers of the ALR in Malaysia and those taking care of elderly at home. These user-friendly Apps can improve medication compliance and also help prevent medication errors and their dangerous consequences, thus adding quality to living for elderly Malaysians and ensuring much-needed compliance.

2Academics and students attain gold medal at 7th iCAN 2022

A team comprising UTAR academics and students from different faculties were awarded a gold medal for their project titled “Digital Interactive Technology in Medical Science Education – Gamification Level 1” at the 7th Annual Edition of the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2022) on 27 August 2022.

The award-winning project was a cross-disciplinary project by Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity Chairperson Dr Aloysius Yapp; Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) lecturer Lim Chai Kim; FCI Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Game Design students Teh Kheng Yee and Chen Fun Sheng; M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Thaw Zin and lecturer Dr Avneet Kaur; MK FMHS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) students Kang Shu Ting and Alicia Ho Pei Shan. It was supported by MK FMHS Senior Prof Dr Ngeow Yun Fong, MK FMHS Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Mohammed Abdul razzaq Jabbar and Faculty of Accountancy and Management Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Pok Wei Fong.

Aside from the gold medal, the team also received the certification of Diploma and Canadian Special Award of Excellence in recognition of their project. Their project aimed to serve as a platform for teaching and learning medical ethics besides delving into a broader social dialogue on the implications of new technologies for privacy, autonomy and liberty. The project is anticipated to promote knowledge and reflection on the aspect of practical and moral dimensions of different areas of the medical curriculum.

3Immersive technology for medical science

The e-KLESF webinar titled “Immersive Technology for Medical Science” was held on 19 August 2022 via Zoom Platform and Facebook Live.

The webinar, organised by UTAR Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity (CITC), aimed to expose the audience to the current and future development of immersive technology and its potential in the fields of medical science.

Invited to speak were three undergraduate students from UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), namely Mechatronics Engineering students Tan Xuan Qing and Poy Yi Ler, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering student Lew Yanzhe. The webinar was moderated by CITC Chairperson Dr Aloysius Yapp.

During the webinar, they educated the audience on the importance of using immersive technology in medical science. They also shared problem statements; companies that developed vein finders; market solutions; Near Infrared Light (NIR) techniques; materials; different ways to check veins (the pros and cons); the development of Mixed Reality Injection Simulation Devices and many more.
