In her presentation, she spoke about the overall contribution and challenges faced in the timber industry, Malaysia's e-commerce rising trend, the policy landscape of Malaysia's e-commerce and network connection, marketing and delivery services, factors hindering the adoption of e-commerce in the timber industry and other related topics. In Fishermen, we do social media content, digital campaign, content production and analytics, search engine optimisation and media. Success comes from a lot of groundwork." During the webinar, Mark Darren Lee also shared some lessons and marketing strategies that won Malaysians' hearts "The process of creating content is tedious. We need to identify the business challenges, objectives, target audiences, and business insights. Upon identifying an objective, we must solve the problem creatively and bring the ideas to life. Look for meaningful insight, understand the competitive market, do not be afraid to try and be daring to try something new or different." He added, "It is good to look for opportunities when competition is quiet. Ideas can include your competitors and something least expected. Collaborations and trends build traction. Opportunities come from conversations on social, and it is also an opportunity to turn social tensions into positivity. Build interactions between brands and consumers. Unexpectedness can create excitement. Timing is important, so ride on opportunities." "We need to research consumer insights based on the ideas from interviews and observations. Look for opportunities from consumer insight. Do not be afraid to be daring and try out new ideas and solutions. If you do not try, you will never know and learn. Always challenge the norm and stand out from the clutter. Create your brand to be distinctive and ownable. Find your passion, and it will drive you to do more things and change the world for the better," advised Mark Darren Lee. Prospects and Opportunities of the World Halal Market
13th of July 2022
UTAR Centre for Entrepreneurial Sustainability (CENTS) collaborated with the UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) and the Halal Centre of Excellence (Halal CoE) to organise a webinar titled Prospects and Opportunities of the World Halal Market. The webinar took place on 13 July 2022 via Microsoft Teams, with Ustaz Mohd Jabal bin Abdul Rahim, the head of Halal CoE, invited to be the speaker. Meanwhile, moderating the webinar was UTAR FAM lecturer Fitriya binti Abdul Rahim. The webinar was mainly aimed at raising awareness about Halal's value and the opportunities the Halal market provides. The talk began with Ustaz Jabal explaining the basic concept of Halal. He stated that it is an Arabic word which means "permitted" or "lawful". On the other hand, its antonym, Haram, is also an Arabic word which means "prohibited". He then talked about the five universal objectives of Halal, which are the Protection of Deen, Life, Mind, Property and Lineage. Speaking about halal products, Ustaz Jabal said, "When a product is deemed Halal, it means that it is using certified and proven Halal ingredients and materials. Once achieved, the product must also be Thoyyiban, which means wholesomeness. To ensure a product Thoyyiban, the product must be Halal, and the workers must properly take care of the product during the processing and production phases. If not, it will lose its Thoyyiban." Ustaz Jabal moved on to talk about the development of Halal in the global industry. "The Halal logo is a symbol of trust, as it can help Muslims identify halal products easily and fulfil their responsibility of consuming Halal products. Meanwhile, it helps non-Muslims, especially in non-Muslim countries, to identify a high-quality product, as the logo ensures a quality product. This proves that Halal is universal as it can help both Muslims and non-Muslims," said Ustaz Jabal. He also displayed a statistic which pointed out that importers of Halal products are mostly from Muslim countries such as Indonesia and Pakistan. At the same time, the exporters consist of non-Muslim countries like Brazil and Australia. Ustaz Jabal pointed out, "When entering the Halal industry, a company usually prioritises a Muslim country, but many of these countries enforce strict Halal regulations, like Indonesia. This becomes a trade barrier, making it difficult to enter the country. Therefore, companies must look at non-Muslim countries with a high Muslim population like India and Russia." Speaking on the development of Halal in the global industry, Ustaz Jabal noted the three stakeholders involved in Halal certification; Authority, Industry players and consumers. "The Halal authorities control and regulate Halal implementations, issue Halal certificates, and boost the Halal industry. Meanwhile, industry players take the opportunity to cater to market demand and make Halal products based on market demand. The consumers are extremely important as they are the catalysts since they drive market demand and choose trusted halal products," said Ustaz Jabal. The final topic that Ustaz Jabal discussed was the Halal Trade Barriers. The Halal Trade Barriers are comprised of four barriers: countries that recognise other Halal Certification Bodies (HCB), countries that recognise their Halal certificate only, countries that only recognise HCBs with ISO 17065, and countries without any restrictions. He also mentioned five issues of Halal: its definition, uncertain ingredients, fake logos, non-Halal ingredients and good manufacturing practices implementation (GMP). The webinar ended with an interactive Q&A and photography session. Refer to the link: https://news.utar.edu.my/news/2022/July/28/02/02.html. |

Invited to grace and launch the forum was the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Malaysia, YB Senator Dato' Sri Ti Lian Ker. The forum was also attended by UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min, who represented UTAR President Ir Prof Dato' Dr Ewe Hong Tat, FAM Dean Dr Sia Bee Chuan, CENTS Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Mohammad Falahat Nejadmahani, UTAR staff and students. A total of three panellists spoke at the forum; they were the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Associate Prof Dr Jady @ Zaidi Hassim, President of Malaysian Canoe Association (MASCA) Dato' Michael Wong Meng San, and UTAR Department of Student Affairs of Sungai Long Campus (DSA) Assistant Manager Nuraini binti Ibrahim. FAM lecturer Dr Angelina Anne Fernandez was the moderator. Speaking about the sports industry in Malaysia, Dato' Ti said, "The future and the current development of the sports industry in Malaysia is huge, as sports is growing tremendously to a larger scope. It is no longer limited to a few industries like tourism, manufacturing and construction. Still, the sports industry has branched out to newer scopes, such as sports development, activities and merchandise. Our country has even developed its own local sports brands to grow the industry further, such as Al-Ikhsan, whilst creating other sports-related media like delving into the film industry to make sports films like Mat Kilau, which has proven to be beneficial and profitable." He also touched on the e-sports sector of the sports industry and how it is being developed in Malaysia. "The current strategic plan for developing e-sports is to boost the public and stakeholders' confidence to venture into e-sports. This strategic plan will unlock its full potential, remove the misconception about e-sports and expedite its development. This strategic plan's vision is to promote a sustainable e-sports ecosystem, and the objective is to propel Malaysian e-sports to greater heights. The main aim is to put Malaysia on the map as Southeast Asia's most active and attractive centre for e-sports excellence and to ensure that young people, including athletes in e-sports, are empowered," said Dato' Ti. Prof Goi said, "The forum today aims to enlighten us about sustainable sports development through promoting sports among youths and, in turn, promoting unity. UTAR has always supported its students competing in sports by honouring them with the Sportsperson of the Year Award and the Most Talented UTARians. Our students have also achieved numerous sports achievements throughout the years, such as being crowned champion at the Dato' Pep Kok Sam's Annual Cup Team Ping Pong Tournament, four medals at the Taekwondo Championship, and first place in the Kejohanan E-Sports Uni League 2020, to name a few." After a souvenir presentation to Dato' Ti and the panellists, the forum officially began. One of the questions discussed at the forum was "What amounts to good governance in the sports industry, and how important is good governance towards the sustainability of the sports industry" which was directed at Dato' Michael, who answered, "The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has laid out seven points on good governance, which are Vision, mission and strategy, Structures, regulations and democratic progress, the highest level of competence, Integrity and ethical standards, Accountability, transparency and control, Solidarity and development, Athletes involvement, participation and care, and Harmonious relations with the government while preserving autonomy. We should focus on improving the sports associations by ensuring good governance before moving on to higher sports ambitions like developing the industry." Another question which Dr Jady answered was, "What are the advantages of arbitration and mediation in resolving sports conflicts". He stated, "First, we must understand the difference between arbitration and mediation. Both involve a third party to settle the disputes, but arbitration is used to resolve more serious conflicts. There are many advantages of arbitration and mediation as opposed to the court. Firstly, the process is simpler, and a resolution can be reached more quickly. Also, settling a conflict using arbitration and mediation is cheaper, as it does not necessarily involve hiring a lawyer. Instead, anyone can be a mediator, or a licensed mediator can be hired." In addressing the question, "What sports activities have UTAR put in place for students to join?", Nuraini replied, "There are various sports tournaments for students to participate in, such as basketball, futsal and e-sports. We also provide training for these students to prepare them for upcoming competitions or if they want to improve. For now, we have training for sports like table tennis and volleyball. Finally, we have facilities like the gymnasium for students to utilise in their free time." The forum then ended with an interactive Q&A session. A webinar titled Conflicts in Cross-cultural Communication was organised by the UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and UTAR Centre for Entrepreneurial Sustainability (CENTS) on 22 August 2022 via Zoom. The webinar saw the participation of more than 100 participants. Public Policy, International Cooperation & Development Specialist Ms Jasmin Johnson was invited to present the talk. The talk began with an activity where Jasmin asked the participants to write down two conflicts they had faced recently and identify the root causes of those conflicts. She then explained that a root analysis must be done to discover the root of a conflict, and the investigation is usually done by asking the question 'why'. She also mentioned that people have different ways of identifying the root causes of conflicts. "Some root causes of conflicts include poor communication, lack of compromise, prejudice, intolerance, self-interest, ignorance, desire for power, lack of empathy, etc. Other causes include making assumptions and not meeting one's need," she said. She then explained the sources of conflicts, including organisational change, ineffective communication, value and culture clashes, personality clashes, work policies and practices, adversarial management and competition for scarce resources. While addressing the topic of culture, she said, "We often put culture as the cause of conflict. Culture is ever-changing and is heavily influenced by personality, politics, etc. Culture, personality and politics heavily influence analysing the root cause." She urged, "Whenever you feel the urge to put something down to "cultural conflict', try to deconstruct what culture is. Try your best to see if there are alternative paths you can take to analyse your conflict." The webinar ended with a closing remark from FAM Dean Dr Sia Bee Chuan. 9 | Talk Series: Introduction to ESG
14th of September 2022
UTAR Centre for Entrepreneurial Sustainability (CENTS), in collaboration with Apex Securities Berhad and UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM), organised a talk titled "Introduction to ESG" on 14 September 2022 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The talk aimed at understanding Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and ways to embrace it. The speaker for the talk was the Research Manager of Apex Securities Berhad, Lee Cherng Wee. The talk was also attended by the Chairperson of CENTS, Associate Professor Dr Mohammad Falahat Nejadmahani, the Head of the Department of Finance, Dr Lim Boon Keong, and FAM lecturer Raymond Ling Leh Bin. After a short souvenir presentation session, Lee discussed several topics. One of the topics included the definition of ESG. He explained, "ESG stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. Environmental factors refer to the impacts a company can have on living and non-living things, while social factors can affect individuals, groups or societies. Lastly, governance factors refer to the organisation's governance structure, composition, knowledge, roles and remuneration." Lee also spoke on why ESG is trending, factoring it to higher awareness and demand from inventors, the ever-growing interest in ESG by millennials, and the rise of regulatory standards on ESG disclosure. He also shared the impacts of ESG, with some examples being product recall, corruption, environmental harm, and unfair treatment of staff. Lee then listed ESG products, including Individual Stocks, Exchange Traded Funds (ETF), Mutual Funds, and Green Bonds.
Explaining the challenges in ESG, Lee finally said, "One of the main challenges of ESG is called Greenwashing, where the company provides false or misleading information about the environmental impact brought about by them or their products." He added, "Another ESG challenge is small companies have to incur high costs and resources to implement ESG, which can affect them. Also, the data and information about the company's ESG activities may not be accurate. This is due to a couple of reasons, such as different scores provided by different rating agencies, the lack of assessment of certain companies by the rating agencies, and the fact that these ratings are based on public data such as annual reports, which are unverified and can be manipulated by the company itself."
The talk ended with a short Q&A session, a group photography session, and a speech by Apex Securities Berhad Executive Director and Head of Dealings Kong Ming Ming and two UTAR alumni currently working at Apex Securities Berhad.
