1 | CEGT Technical Talk - Challenges faced by palm oil mills on effluent discharge and proposed solutions
Mr. Andrew Liew Shun Bin, Director, Aqua Ecotech Sdn. Bhd.
11 August 2022, 5.00-6.30 pm
Total 65 participants including staff and students joined this technical talk which was delivered by Mr. Andrew Liew Shun Bin from Aqua Ecotech Sdn. Bhd. He presented the challenges faced by palm oil mills on effluent discharge and proposed solutions. The process of oil extraction from the fruit bunches generates high volume of palm oil mill effluent (POME) from the palm oil mill industries. Typically, palm oil is produced through a series of sterilization, stripping, digestion, oil extraction and oil clarification process, then followed by kernel separation and drying. Thus, despite its contribution to Malaysia’s economy, palm oil mill effluent has become the major pollutant contributed by palm oil mills when discharge to the environment. Conventional ponding system for POME treatment is still commonly used in Malaysia due to the geographical area where large land is available and constant warm environment to support the treatment of POME. This Industrial sharing session aims to highlight the main challenges faced in term of POME treatment and present potential effective solutions. SPEAKER Mr. Andrew Liew Shun Bin is a director at Aqua Ecotech Sdn. Bhd He has worked in the agriculture and oil palm industry for the last 35 years, as market and product development executive, agronomist & technical advisor, technopreneur and businessman. He filed several patents such as Solid Removal Oil Recovery System (SRORS) to separate palm oil mills’ raw sludge to its components of oil, suspended solids and water. He worked in collaboration with Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) to use SRORS to reduce chlorides in crude palm oil (CPO) process by removing cross contamination.
