Introduction

In the highly competitive and globalised environment today, it is imperative that organisations such as universities to continuously enhancing their roles of knowledge and value creation to ensure their relevance to economy and society. Research, development and commercialisation (RDC) thus becomes the key activities of universities. UTAR being one of the many institutions of higher learning in the country has to focus and excel in RDC to ensure its long term survival, relevance and recognition by the world. UTAR has to define its direction and ways to transform itself into a world recognised research focused university.

A research roadmap (2010 – 2014) of UTAR has been defined and announced to the university community in Aug 2009. Clear and measurable key performance indicators (KPIs) have been defined and relevant benchmarks have been set in the roadmap.

A mere research roadmap is just the beginning of the long and challenging journey that all academic and researchers in UTAR are to go through if the ultimate goal of world recognition of UTAR research activities is to be achieved. Between now and the ultimate goal are concurrent and series of research plans, activities, actions and processes that we need to define and implement strategically such that the impacts (measurable in KPIs) are maximised.

In the 1st UTAR Research Workshop held in Oct 2009 some R&D ideas were proposed. The proposed 2nd UTAR Research Workshop is to serve as a platform for further discussion on new R&D themes and ideas in addition to the follow-up actions on some of the previously proposed ideas.
