Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM)
The Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) project
is an ASM initiative in line with its focus on
fostering a culture of excellence in science,
technology and innovation (STI). The project aims to
identify and recognize the leading research
scientists in Malaysia. The output of this project
is a TRSM profile that would provide a centralized
point of reference on leading scientists in Malaysia
along with information on their research areas. The
convention of the best minds in the country would
create a hub for knowledge dissemination that can
spur the growth of STI in Malaysia.
1. Objectives
-To develop a list of leading research scientists;
-To recognize and showcase top Malaysian research
scientists as drivers of the national STI agenda;
-To identify Malaysian research scientists with
pioneer mindset to move the country forward in an
innovation-led economy; and
-To build a critical mass of leading research
scientists.
2. Significance
This project aims to showcase top Malaysian research
scientists who can serve as follows:
-Role models of excellence;
-Mentor to the next generation;
-Leaders to implement the STI agenda;
-Experts to strengthen industry and stakeholders
confidence in research capacity and capability;
-Think tank and advisors to national STI policy and
decision-making;
-Science communicators and ambassadors;
-Science and technology project evaluators;
-Reference points for STI linkages at national and
international levels; and
-Agents for wealth creation and societal well being.
3. Usability
The TRSM Database is envisaged to facilitate the
following uses:
-Expertise search;
-Profiling of researchers;
-Clustering of expertise;
-Promotion and positioning of top Malaysian research
scientists;
-Facilitating business networking and matching with
other institutions;
-Promoting research networking and matching with
other institutions;
-Determining the impact of top Malaysian
researchers;
-Gateway for international grant agencies to find
research partners in Malaysia;
-Identification of Malaysian research leaders in STI
to move K-economy;
-Benchmarking national strength in STI;
-Providing information to facilitate nomination of
STI awards;
-Showcasing ‘Who’s Who’ as innovation leader and
academic leader;
-Facilitating informed decisions on allocations for
funding and policy;
-Identifying the gaps in demand and supply of niche
research areas and human resource development; and
-Attracting prospective investors and facilitating
postgraduate linkages for R&D activities.
4. Eligibility
· The recognition is given to Malaysian research
scientists working in Malaysia whose outstanding
achievements in STI have been nationally and
internationally recognized.
· At the time of application, the candidate should
be actively involved in research (research
activities in the last 5 years should be reflected
in CV) with at least 10 years cumulative
contribution towards the progress of STI.
· The candidate should be of high ethical standing.
5. Application/ Nomination Mechanism
-Each organization (IPTA/IPTS/RI/NGO/Industry/STE
Professional Body) shall nominate candidate(s) based
on the eligibility criteria stated. There is no
limit to the number of nominations from each
organization.
-Eligible candidate can also apply individually.
-Nomination is limited to individuals only.

6. Evaluation Process
-All applications will be evaluated by an appointed
panel of eminent scientists.
-The decision of the panel shall be final.
-All applicants will be notified of the decision.
7. Privileges
Those who are recognized as Top Research Scientists
Malaysia can benefit from the following privileges:
-Facilitation by ASM for attachment to
world-renowned research laboratories and centres of
excellence by leveraging on ASM’s international and
national linkages;
-International Fund Facilitation Programme (IFFP) to
obtain international R&D grants;
-Profiled in leading media;
-Featured in STI databases as ‘Top Research
Scientists Malaysia for promotion and positioning;
-Featured in a book on ‘Top Research Scientists
Malaysia’ to be published by ASM; and
-Preference for research funding.
8. Closing Date
The closing date for submission for the 1st Cycle
TRSM application is 31th July 2012
