Master of Commerce (Applied Accounting)
Overview
The
UTAR Master of Commerce (Applied Accounting) (MCom(AA)) is meant for
accounting candidates who are keen in advancing further in the
accountancy profession. The programme will equip the candidates to
contribute at a strategic level in the organization.
Graduates from MCom(AA) will demonstrate their capabilities and competence in the following:
• Professional knowledge and application skills
•
Transform into new generation accountants and develop expertise in
personal financial planning, fraud auditing, business consulting and in
other emerging financial, business and information technology areas
•
Analytical or constructive skills that refer to problem identification
in complicated situations and development of creative solutions
•
Behavioural skills or 'soft skills', i.e. personal, interpersonal,
organizational skills as well as the ability to work and communicate in
a team environment
•
Understand the value system of accountants and its relationship to
societal values with special reference to work related values
•
Appreciate the value of continuing professional education (CPE) in
enhancing professionalism in an accountant
The
UTAR MCom(AA) is a contemporary and challenging programme comprising 12
core subjects including research methodologies, 2 elective subjects and
a case writing project.
Throughout
the programme, candidates are encouraged to participate in enhancement
courses such as Project Writing Workshop and to attend seminars and
talks conducted by industry practitioners.
Who should enroll ?
The
MCom(AA) is ideal for candidates with a basic degree in accounting who
wish to develop the application aspects of accounting through practical
technical knowledge. The programme will also develop the skills
necessary to an accountant to deal with the strategic aspects of
leading a business organization.
Mode of Study
The
coursework-based MCom(AA) programme comprises a major coursework
component and a case writing project. Satisfactory completion of both
components is required for the award of the degree. The coursework
component consists of a number of subjects assessed by a combination of
continuous assessment and final examination. Continuous assessment
includes individual and group assignment work, case-studies and tests.
Some subjects may include additional practical components.
Duration
Fulltime : 1½ years - Max 4 years
Part-time : 2½ years - Max 6 years

Entry Requirements
(a) A Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Accounting from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman or any other university
recognised by the Senate; or
(b) An equivalent qualification
from an institution recognized as of comparable status by the Senate; or
(c) A degree or equivalent
with at least two (2) years working experience after obtaining that degree, or
equivalent.
‘two’ (2) years working experience’
means any working experience after obtaining that qualification which period
shall also include practical training and any industrial attachment.
