Master of Arts (Chinese Studies)

Overview
The Master of Arts (Chinese Studies) program provides candidates with the opportunity to pursue their interest in research on Chinese language and literature, culture and society, and history and philosophy. Candidates will study various aspects of Chinese civilization to better understand China and its influence on its neighbors. This postgraduate program, structured towards academic performance and skills in critical thinking and inquiry, will produce graduates to cater to the needs of various professions inside and outside the country. It is a specialized program consisting of either exclusive research-based or a combination of research and coursework mode of study. Throughout the program, candidates are encouraged to participate and attend enhancement courses such as Project/Dissertation Writing Workshops or Lecture Series.

Mode of Study

Research-based programs generally have the objective of training candidates in research methodology and techniques, and in the critical evaluation of the research work carried out. Candidates are also required to apply and evaluate methodologies and techniques. An original contribution to the body of knowledge in the field undertaken is required for award of the Master's degree by research.

2. Coursework and Research (Structure B)
This structure comprises a major coursework component and a research component written up as a dissertation. Satisfactory completion of both components is required for the award of the degree. The coursework component offers subjects which provide candidates with an interdisciplinary and liberal arts background in Chinese culture and Southeast Asian Chinese society. Typically, the coursework component consists of three core subjects and three elective subjects. There will be a specified amount of contact time which will take the form of seminars, tutorials and lectures. Assessment for most subjects includes individual and group assignment work, case-studies and examinations. Candidates may be required to give seminars and write reports on their research.
