Areas in which the CENTRE focuses on would be to study and develop new photonic and optoelectronic technologies associated with solar energy, renewable energy, bio-sensing, medical diagnostic, etc. These include R&D on solar cell concentrator, solar concentrator, optically rechargeable solid state battery, optical sensor networks, optical sensors, photonic and optoelectronic devices, optoelectronic device packaging, nano-materials, quantum optics, etc.

CPR is divided into four focused research groups which are High Concentration Solar Energy group (HiCSEG), Optical Sensor and Design group (OSDG), Nano and Polymeric Materials group (NPMG), Quantum Optics group (QOG), Photonic Devices and Systems group (PDS) and Manufacturing Technology group (MT).

HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLAR ENERGY GROUP

This group consists of physicists and engineers who will be doing work in harnessing solar energy using imaging and non-imaging optics for concentrating sunlight and increasing the energy conversion efficiency.

  • Concentrator photovoltaic design, solar hot water system, solar furnace, high temperature solar processes, Solar pumped laser system, Solar Power Plant (Central tower, Parabolic dish, Parabolic Trough), Solar Hydrogen, etc.

OPTICAL SENSOR AND DESIGN GROUP

This group consists of physicists and engineers who will be doing work in fabricating and designing optical sensors, optical sensor system, optical sensor network and optical systems. Area of interest includes:

  • Waveguide and fiber based optical sensors, optical biosensors, optical chemical sensors, micro-fluidic sensor, plasmonic sensors, optical sensor system, optical coherence tomography (OCT), etc.

NANO and POLYMERIC MATERIAL GROUP

This group consists of chemists, physicists and engineers who will be doing work in synthesizing, characterizing and fabricating materials for photonic/optoelectronic devices and optoelectronic packaging. Area of interest includes:

  • Photovoltaic device and material fabrication, Photovoltaic micro-concentrator design, Optically rechargeable batteries, Polymer electrolytes for solar cell, Conductive polymers for opto- and electronics packagng, Semiconductor materials, Dye-sensitized solar cells, Coating design, plasmonic devices, micro- and nano-structured thin films, etc.

QUANTUM OPTICS GROUP

This group consists of physicists who will be doing work in understanding the fundamentals of light interaction or behavior at nano-scale. Area of interest includes:

  • Quantum theory, quantum feedback control, quantum computing, quantum encryption, quantum communication, etc.

PHOTONIC DEVICES AND SYSTEMS GROUP

This group consists of physicists and engineers who will be doing work in modeling, fabrication and characterizing photonics devices and systems for optical communication and network system.

  • Fiber to the home system (FTTH), optoelectronic devices, optical fiber communication systems and network modeling, optical sensor network, optical sensor system etc.

MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY GROUP

This group consists of chemists, materials scientists and engineers who will be doing work on understanding and ability to use cost-effective and modern manufacturing process and technology. This group focuses on using latest computing powers in modeling and analyzing of manufacturing technology such as forging, casting etc. to improve yields, quality of finished goods and saving in materials and energy. Area of interest includes:

  • Optimizing the processes through computer modelling, Metal-Matrix Composite (MMC) fabrication process by gravity die/squeeze casting technology, materials processing of lead-free interconnection and new alloys with desirable mechanical properties, reliability and manufacturability, etc.
